Gareth Ainsworth could feature in tonight’s Checkatrade Trophy match at Northampton after injuries have depleted his squad further.

The Blues sustained two fresh knocks during Saturday’s 2-0 defeat to Colchester United meaning more than a third of Ainsworth’s squad are now out injured.

Wanderers have also confirmed Joe Jacobson is likely to miss 10-12 weeks after withdrawing from the match day squad against the U’s.

Ainsworth is expected to name himself on the bench for tonight’s match and could well come on to relieve his tiring squad, a club statement read.

Wycombe chairman Andrew Howard addressed the issue on the club’s website and suggested the vast number of injuries has had an impact on Wanderers’ results.

He said “The fundamental structure of the squad has been decimated by injuries which is now having a catastrophic effect.

“It means the team haven’t been able to reach their full potential with such a wealth of talent currently missing from the squad, particularly in terms of the pace and width in attack.

“Their absences are in turn putting extra demand on those lads in the team and resulting in more injuries along the way.”

Howard went on to praise the efforts the Wycombe squad have made to absorb the injuries to key players such as Luke O’Nien, Paris Cowan-Hall and Myles Weston.

“Every member of that dressing room is determined and desperate to run through brick walls for each other,” he said.

“Many are playing through the pain, but there’s only so much the body can take and sometimes you need to stop and allow yourself to recover.

“They are all contributing everything they can, and if that means that the manager has to pull his boots on again for the cause then that epitomises the spirit we have here.

“What we do need is patience and understanding from the supporters. It’s a long season and we are well equipped to challenge towards the right end of the table once we have our full weaponry available.”
