LUKE O'NIEN put behind him the broken leg misery at the start of this season to bag the vital second goal in a 2-0 win over Morecambe.

The 21-year-old midfielder nipped in front of his marker to head Paul Hayes' cross into the Shrimpers' goal with just nine minutes remaining.

Earlier, central defender Aaron Pierre had given Wycombe the lead within 90 seconds of the second half, beating goalkeeper Barry Roche with a header from six yards out after meeting a Joe Jacobson free-kick.

For O'Nien, described by his manager Gareth Ainsworth as "one of the most competitive people I know", the smile on his face was broad after the match as the Chairboys collected three welcome points and a first win in five games.

"That was a brilliant three points, and I'm glad I got to score the second goal," he said. "It was a great ball through from Hayesey, I got a head on it and the ball flew in. I'd missed a chance earlier, so I was glad to get the goal."

O'Nien has had the best part of 10 weeks out of the game after breaking his leg in the opening game of the season at Crawley. He can't recall exactly how the break happened as he tried to play through the pain.

But since then he has been spending a lot of time in an oxygen chamber at a private hospital to help speed the recovery time, along with plenty of physio and work in the swimming pool.

"The physio has been brilliant and really helped to get me back quickly," he added. "I'd spend an hour and a half in the oxygen chamber with a few of the other lads recovering from injury. It wasn't the best fun you can have, but it helped.

"I was never fearful about my career with the leg break, I just knew I had to concentrate on the recovery."

O'Nien featured at Doncaster and Portsmouth, and is now hoping to establish himself as a regular in the midfield.

His manager said after a fantastic first season at Wycombe, the timing of the injury was unfortunate. "Luke has still not played 50 games for us, but I am sure he will go on to get better."

Ainsworth described the three points as "very pleasing" pointing out how narrow the difference was between top and bottom in League 2 - six points between the relegation and play-off zones.

"At half-time we were in 22nd place at 0-0 and now we are 16th," he pointed out. "You look at this league and it is hard to judge who are the best and who are the worst teams. But I believe we have a fantastic base here and we need to be looking up."

Goalscorer Aaron Pierre scored his first goal of the season. He was just as delighted with the cleansheet as he was about the goal. "It was JJ's (Jacobson) delivery," he said. "I asked JJ where was he going to put the ball, he said he was going to pop it in the box, and I hit it and the ball took a deflection.

"I can't remember the last time I scored, I think it was against Morecambe. Every week I say I am going to score, and this week I scored. I love playing against Morecambe."
