Wycombe Wanderers and Plymouth Argyle shared the spoils in an enthralling 1-1 draw at Adams Park, but the home side will rue the fact that they missed some great chances to put the game to bed.

Myles Weston gave the Chairboys the lead on 18 minutes when he superbly placed a side footed volley past Luke McCormick from Michael Harriman’s terrific cross.

However, substitute Nathan Blissett equalised moments after coming on as he planted an excellent header beyond the reach of Jamal Blackman into the far corner on 74 minutes.

Wanderers had several opportunities to extend their advantage but couldn’t find the net when it mattered most.

Adebayo Akinfenwa almost had the crowd on his feet after eight minutes when he let fly from 30 yards and his shot dipped just wide with McCormick beaten.

Luke O’Nien then had a great chance three minutes later when Weston pulled the ball back expertly from Joe Jacobson’s deep cross but McCormick made a great save to deny the midfielder.

Wanderers were certainly the dominant side and Weston gave them the lead with a beautifully controlled finish.

The game had quietened down a bit after a dominant start by the home side as Argyle threatened sporadically.

On the half-hour mark, Max Muller’s looping header went just over from Jacobson’s raking free-kick.

Dangerman Graham Carey was being kept quiet by Wycombe, most notably by Marcus Bean who kept in close attendance to the Pilgrims playmaker.

However, Derek Adams’ side had their first chance on 32 minutes when Jimmy Spencer saw his shot parried away by Jamal Blackman and then Jake Jervis saw his follow-up blocked wide.

Wycombe came close to extending their advantage on 42 minutes when Weston swung in a teasing cross but Akinfenwa stabbed the ball wide.

The Pilgrims came out for the second half strongly and Jervis tested Blackman from the edge of the box on 46 minutes.

Plymouth had certainly come out of the blocks quicker in the second period and some solid defending by Gareth Ainsworth’s side were keeping the visitors at bay.

However, Dominic Gape had a golden opportunity to double Wycombe’s lead but he headed straight at McCormick from six yards after some more dazzling wing play by Weston.

Akinfenwa was causing mayhem for Argyle’s backline and he saw a header clawed away McCormick just after the hour.

The Green Army were continuing to probe away at the Wanderers defence without quite testing Blackman.

Blackman came to the home side’s rescue on 73 minutes when he denied Blissett with a superb save.

Unfortunately for the Chairboys, from the resulting corner, Blissett sent the travelling fans into a frenzy to set up a grandstand finish.

Will De Havilland almost had an immediate impact off the bench himself but saw his flick desperately saved by McCormick after good work by Paris Cowan-Hall.

Both sides held out and Ainsworth’s side now sit five points off the playoffs with nine games remaining.
