Alex Hales played a key role yesterday as England thrashed South Africa by nine wickets in the first of three T20 internationals between the sides.

Hales smashed 47 not out off 38 balls with three fours and two sixes as England cruised to their target of 143 in Southampton.

England had restricted their opponents to 142/3 off their 20 overs with AB De Villiers top scoring with 65 not out.

However, on a good batting pitch that was to prove nowhere near enough as Hales and opening partner Jason Roy got the run chase off to a flyer.

Roy was out for a quickfire 28 before former Chesham Grammar School pupil Hales and batting partner Jonny Bairstow demolished the South African bowlers to all parts.

Hales will be hoping to continue his good form when England face the visitors at Taunton tomorrow before the final match takes place on Tuesday. The Test series then follows.
