Wycombe Wanderers were held to a 0-0 draw by Exeter City at Adams Park despite a glut of opportunites to win the game.

Adebayo Akinfenwa was the chief culprit, missing three gilt-edged chances to give the Blues all three points.

His first great chance came on 19 minutes when he headed over unmarked from a brilliant cross by Ebere Eze.

The big man had two further opportunites in the second half. The first on the hour when he met Nick Freeman's brilliant cross but headed straight at Christy Pym.

Arguably, his best chance of the three came five minutes later when Eze burst clear down the right and sent a low cross in which Akinfenwa but he somehow steered wide from six yards.

Overall, Wanderers were by far the better team and Akinfenwa caused chaos for the Exeter defence with his presence.

Wycombe made a positive start to the game and had the first sighter of goal on three minutes but Joe Jacobson’s free kick was wide of the target.

Eze had a half-chance on 27 minutes when Pym dropped the ball at the feet of the young playmaker but he saw his goalbound shot cleared.

Exeter had their first opportunity on the half hour mark when Hiram Boateng smashed a shot towards goal but Scott Brown pulled off a fantastic save to deny him.

The visitors were gradually getting into the contest and came very close to taking the lead on 35 minutes when Jayden Stockley’s terrific free kick clipped the bar.

Akinfenwa almost gave the visitors the lead six minutes into the second half when he brought down Adam El-Abd’s free kick expertly but rifled a shot from 20 yards into the side netting.

It was a tight affair and Exeter were working hard to get an opening. Reuben Reid missed a tough chance on 58 minutes when he stretched to meet Lloyd James’ cross but put it wide of the upright.

For all their chances and domination, Paul Tisdale’s men looked a threat on the break and Jake Taylor saw his shot blocked heroically by skipper El-Abd on 67 minutes.

With the game ebbing and flowing, Jordan Tillson headed wide from Lee Holmes’ corner on 70 minutes.

Wanderers continued to huff and puff but the finish was proving elusive.

There was a big shout for a penalty on 80 minutes as Paris Cowan-Hall got in down the right but his shot was blocked by Dean Moxey with huge appeals for handball but the referee waved away the pleas.

One last big chance almost brought the house down when Anthony Stewart slammed the ball into the net but the referee blew up for an infringement.

A very good display by Gareth Ainsworth's side but one which could easily have brought a victory.
