Wycombe Wanderers suffered heartbreak in the final minutes at Adams Park as Cambridge United scored a last minute equaliser to make it 1-1 after a hard-fought encounter..

Paul Lewis crashed home from 12 yards to send the Cambridge fans into raptures after good work by Uche Ikpeazu.

It had looked good for the Blues when Adebayo Akinfenwa bagged his 17th goal of the season with a textbook header in first-half stoppage time from Scott Brown's raking long kick.

Overall, it was a good performance by the Blues, who edged it on chances.

Wanderers started brightly and Paris Cowan-Hall had a half chance after just two minutes but Tafari Moore’s cross was just inches too high for him.

The game was a stop-start affair early on with prolonged treatment to Adam El-Abd and Cambridge’s George Maris.

Nathan Tyson came close to putting the Blues ahead on the half-hour mark when he met Adebayo Akinfenwa’s excellent through ball, burst into the box but dragged his shot wide from 10 yards.

Cambridge bounced back on 34 minutes when Uche Ikpeazu got in down the right and pulled it back to Gary Deegan, who saw his fierce shot well saved by Scott Brown.

Liam O’Neil followed up but his 20 yard strike went inches over.

It was a very tight game but Akinfenwa grabbed the decisive goal with a trademark header.

Wanderers had a good chance to make it two seconds before the break when Dan Scarr headed Joe Jacobson’s free kick across goal but El-Abd nodded it over.

Cambridge came out quickly in the second half and Ikpeazu almost equalised but saw his effort blocked heroically by Dominic Gape.

The U’s were given the Blues backline something to think about but Scarr and El-Abd were holding firm.

Scarr came close to doubling the home side’s advantage as he met Jacobson’s dangerous delivery but David Forde tipped his header over on 56 minutes.

Cambridge responded and Brad Halliday went on a marauding run from right-back and his daisycutter on 62 minutes drifted just wide with Brown scrambling.

The game started to open up and Wanderers came so close to scoring on 64 minutes when Luke O’Nien’s low cross was skewed onto the post by Cambridge defender George Taft with Forde well beaten.

The pace of Tyson and Cowan-Hall started to pose real problems for the Cambridge rearguard and the latter released Tyson who’s low cross on 66 minutes was met with a left-footed strike by Akinfenwa, who was denied brilliantly by Forde.

Gareth Ainsworth’s men were starting to turn the screw and the dangerous Akinfenwa had a sniff on 70 minutes when he met the lively Cowan-Hall’s cross but his effort drifted wide.

The visitors still showed their threat when David Amoo’s deflected cross found Ikpeazu but Gape somehow managed to clear the danger.

O’Nien came so close to scoring another howitzer this season when his left-foot rocket on 75 minutes flew just wide of the upright with Forde rooted to the spot.

Taft had a great chance to get a leveller for the U's on 78 minutes but his volley went well wide from 12 yards with the goal gaping.

The superb O'Nien crashed another screamer from the edge of the box on 84 minutes which Forde did well to parry away.

Lewis then had his say with his last-gasp intervention before Scott Kashket had a final chance but struck well over from 15 yards.

Overall, it was a good performance by the Blues, who edged it on chances and they still have a huge say in the promotion shake-uo
