No complaints as Blues match abandoned

THERE were no complaints from either side after today’s match between Wycombe Wanderers and Bristol Rovers was abandoned because of the weather.

The away end was twice struck by lightning and health and safety concerns led to the match being called off after 65 minutes, with Rovers 3-1 up.

Pirates boss Mark McGhee looked incandescent with rage as he led his players back down the tunnel, but he said after the game the decision was the correct one.

He said: “We have to accept the safety officer had the interest of both sets of supporters at heart. He had to make the decision.

“We’re obviously disappointed as we were winning at the time but totally satisfied the decision was made in good faith.”

Wanderers manager Gary Waddock said: “It was for health and safety reasons so you have to say of course it is [the correct decision].

“As we came out for the second half with the grey skies we had and the rain, it was awful conditions.

“You can understand Bristol Rovers being disappointed with the scoreline being 3-1, but health and safety is more important than any result.”

Striker Richard Logan scored his first Wanderers goal, but with the abandonment it will be chalked off.

Despite that he was relieved at the decision to call the game off.

He said: “I kept talking to their lads. Some of them have kids and they were saying they want to see them grow up, they don’t want to get hit by lightning. We were having a bit of banter about it.

“They were gutted because they were 3-1 up and we’d do the same if we were at their place, but for everyone’s safety it was the right call.”

No complaints ? the story has changed three times already, any proof of these lightening strikes ? and if so dangerous, why were the Bristol Rovers supporters held in that same stand for over half an hour if it was not safe ?

When we left the ground the away end gates were clearly open and a few of the Bristol spectators were leaving although clearly in a fractious mood as they were taking out their frustrations on the rubbish bins! The rest we could hear were chanting "we are going nowhere" and assume were staying in their seats? I would tend to sympathise with them as clearly Bristol were playing the better football and the storm did appear to have passed. It was still raining and the pitch had become a bit of a quagmire but wasn't cutting up. Whatever the final outcome though the second half would have been a bit of a lottery for either side as the puddles were getting deeper!

No complaints from either side? I think McGhee's comments were very much tongue in cheek, with regards to Wycombe's decision to call-off the game with 25 mins to go.
