'We showed what we're capable of'

HIGH Wycombe RFC took the edge off winter’s arrival with their second victory of the season last Saturday.

With just one win in eight going into the match, the result couldn’t have come soon enough for the Kingsmead club.

But it was the means as well as the end that most pleased coach Dave Roberts.

He said: “It was nice to finally have a win, and nice to get it playing so well.

“We had a bit of consistency of selection from Marlow to last week, and that showed.

“They finally showed what we know they’re capable of.”

The writing was on the wall early.

Newbury Blues kicked off, but they didn’t touch the ball again until after Dan Sumnall had gone over for the first of his two tries.

Steve Phillpott, Luke Harding, Craig Murray and Matt Wardle also crossed in a six-try exhibition that been a long time choreographing.

Roberts said: “In the last two weeks we’ve got nine tries. At the beginning of the season we were struggling to get one try in a game.

“But we got two late tries against Marlow and I think you could see the development as rapidly as that.

“Then in the week we really worked a threatening midfield and being able to score tries through the backs.

“That really came out and as an attacking force we were threatening in all areas.”

The line-outs and scrums were also vastly improved, and the focus now is not letting the power surge brought about from victory trail off before the new year.

A trip to second-placed Old Centralians on Saturday doesn’t bode well. They are unbeaten at home and within a point of leaders Bracknell.

Roberts said: “It’s not the ideal game, coming up against one of the top teams when you’re just getting a bit of a roll on.

“But our aim now is to get another one or two wins before Christmas and pick up a few bonus points too.”
