A CRESSEX schoolboy boxer has become a two-time national champion despite doing most of his training in his own living room.

Jamal Khan won the U46g national schoolboy belt in Huddersfield on Sunday to back up the U42kg belt he won last year.

He beat Joe Tyers by an unanimous points verdict and now faces a box-off later this month for the chance to represent England in the Three Nations in May.

If Khan does progress, he will have a chance to fight for a second Three Nations title after he won it last year following wins over boxers from Scotland and Wales.

Dad Istasar Khan said: “He did really well. Joe was also a national champion last year so it was champion against champion, but Jamal was clever and out-boxed him.

“After the first round it was clear that Joe was getting desperate because nothing he was trying was working. Jamal was making him miss all the time.

“I’m never normally satisfied, but he proved a lot to me on Sunday. He showed he’s got guts and he did what he needed to do to win.

“He deserves it. He doesn’t miss training, he eats right and he listens to his coaches – I’m really proud of him.”

Khan boxes out of the reputable Repton Club in London but much of his preparations are done at home with coach Adrian Moco.

Khan senior said: “He goes to the club three times a week but everything else, all the one-on-one sessions with Adrian, is done in our living room.

“We just move the sofas out of the way and put a punch bag in there and they just get on with it.”

Khan’s victory on Sunday came in front of the England selectors, and further progress on the international scene could be on the cards.

Dad said: “I’d like him to go all the way and get a European title and then maybe a world title when he’s older.

“But it’s a tough sport and we’re just taking it one step at a time.”
