ALEX Hales has been called up by England for their one-day international series against India.

Hales, who played for Amersham and Gerrards Cross before breaking into the professional game, now looks set to make his ODI debut against India in Bristol on August 25.

Further ODIs follow on August 27, August 30, September 2 and September 5 with a T20 international on September 7.

He said: "I’ve worked really hard this year on my Red Bull cricket and the longer form of the game in 50 overs.

“I’m pleased I’ve managed to hit form at the right time and hopefully I can carry that on into the ODI series.

“I’ve played 30-odd T20 internationals now, so I know what international cricket is about; all the pressure that comes with it and hopefully I can thrive under it.”

Hales has played 32 T20s for England with an average of nearly 38.

He has three of England's four highest T20 scores, with his 116 against Sri Lanka topping the charts, and is currently ranked third in the international T20 batting rankings.

The 25-year-old, who is replacing Ravi Bopara in the one-day side, has also been in great form for Notts recently with two centuries in the past week and the selectors have finally been convinced to transfer his power hitting at the top of the order to the one-day side.

It is likely he will open the batting with Alistair Cook as England search for a winning formula ahead of the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand in February.

England batter Eoin Morgan said: "Alex is an outstanding player and he has had a fantastic year. He has proven in Twenty20 international cricket that when he does get himself in he can be so destructive.

“He shows glimpses of guys I’ve played with – guys like Kevin Pietersen that can also in similar fashion take a game away from a side.

“Alex stakes a claim to be in the side and he puts a hell of a case forward to play. I love playing with him, he is a genuine guy and can be quite funny at times, but his cricket is second to none.”
