NO points and no goals in the past week has brought Chesham United to an early crossroads.

While four points from four games is hardly the stuff of crisis, but Chesham are a victim of their own success.

Manager Andy Leese said: “We carry a reputation with us from the last three seasons and we have to start to live up to it.

“There were so many changes during the summer that pre-season could last for six months and we’d still be finding out about players.

“But we’ve set targets and we’re not hitting them. I’m sure there will be some players [that left during the close season] smirking because we’ve not started so well, and fans at other clubs.

“We know the rules. These are difficult, difficult times.”

Chesham lost 1-0 at home to Redditch on Saturday and went down by the same score at early Southern League leaders Cambridge City on Tuesday, when they stepped up their performance without taking their chances.

Leese said: “The Cambridge match report says we were unlucky not get something from the game, but that doesn’t cut it with me.

“We improved from Saturday. We created more chances than they did and dominated possession in the second half, but we don’t seem to have enough to capitalise.

“Lots of things are still not where they should be.”

Chesham are just six points off top spot so their teething problems are hardly terminal, but they won’t want to fall too far off the pace.

Last season they allowed Hemel to pull away and then spent the second half of the season waiting for the dip in form that never came.

Tomorrow they host Corby and on Monday go to Slough knowing two more blanks won’t be good enough.

Leese said: “We’re probably only one win away from where we’d like to be, but this is a big weekend. We need to get some points on the board and start scoring goals.”

And if not, the clock could be ticking on some careers at The Meadow.

Leese said: “We have to get this weekend out of the way then review the squad.

“I said I’d back the squad and I will – certainly for the next few games.

“But if we’re not getting results we have to do something.

“There are players that would like to come here, some targets that we had over the summer are now available and I’m not quite seeing it or feeling it from certain players.”
