UZAIR Amjaid capped a superb debut season for High Wycombe Cricket Club's first team by collecting a hat trick of awards this week.

The 15-year-old leg spinner picked up the John Newton Trophy, presented to the best junior cricketer at the club playing senior cricket, and also collected the junior player of the year and colt player of the year.

He picked up the awards at the club's end of season dinner on Saturday, having grabbed his first team opportunity with both hands after starring for the under 15s and the senior second team last year.

Amjaid is the cousin of 16-year-old Saif Zaib, who recently signed professional terms with Northamptonshire after also starring in a young Wycombe team that finished runners-up in the Home Counties Premier League.

Dad Amjaid Aurangzeb said: "He's had an incredible season - some of his highlights have been amazing.

"He was inspirational in beating Henley. Between him and his cousin, they took six wickets - a 15 and 16-year-old in tandem - to beat the league leaders. Had they [Henley] won the game, they would have won the league.

"Where he's triumphed is in the big games, with the nerve he's got. A lot of children break under pressure.

"He's been given the opportunity by High Wycombe, which in itself is amazing. They're not just taking part, they are shining as part of the team.

"We are incredibly proud - both of these lads are on a fantastic cricketing path."

Keith Newell, the club’s Director of Cricket said: "Uzair is a great player and has a bright future in front of him. We hoped he would do well in the first team and he did, taking to it like a duck to water, brimming full of confidence and never looking out of place.

"We have a number of talented players playing within our front two sides now and they will only get better quicker due to the level they play at and the players they’re playing with."

Amjaid has this season also been selected for the Bucks academy under 25 side and played for the county team at under 16 and under 17 level.
