MARLOW pair Chris Lawrie and Morgan Lake are both in the running to follow in the footsteps of Bucks clay pigeon shooter Amber Hill by winning a national award for emerging talent.

They have made the shortlist for SportsAid’s One to Watch after impressing on the international stage.

For Lake, a former pupil at Sir William Borlase’s, this is her second year on the shortlist.

The Windsor, Slough, Eton and Hounslow star has earned her place after winning high jump and heptathlete gold at the World Junior Championships in Oregon.

Meanwhile, Lawrie, who still attends Sir William Borlase’s, competed at the Youth Olympics earlier this year, coming fourth.

He and Lake are among ten hopefuls still in the running for the award from more than 1,300 entries.

Lawrie said: “I found out via Twitter. A friend told me I’d been tweeted so I had a look on my phone.

“It was pretty crazy, but a nice surprise.

“I knew all about SportsAid but I hadn’t heard of One to Watch. I googled it the names that have been shortlisted and won it in the past are incredible.

“Just to be mentioned in that group is amazing.

“Morgan was shortlisted last year too and she is a real inspiration. She is more or less a professional athlete now and is looking to go to Rio in 2016.

“For me, Rio is an awfully long shot. It is possible and is definitely a goal, but I’m still a junior rower. Tokyo in 2020 might be the one for me.”

Lawrie and Lake are bidding to succeed fellow Bucks star Hill, of High Wycombe’s EJ Churchill Club.

She won the award last year after becoming the youngest ever winner of a senior World Cup, aged just 16, and then went on to lift the BBC Young Personality of the Year gong too.

The winner will be announced at a gala evening in London on November 27.

Meanwhile, teenage golfer Charlotte West has already benefited from SportsAid after receiving a £750 grant from the Bucks SportsAid Foundation.

The 17-year-old amateur is already part of the England U16 squad and beat a professional field to win her first event in the WPGA One Day Series at Chestfield in Kent.

West, a former Bucks champion, lives in Prestwood and attends Amersham and Wycombe College.

She is a member of Harewood Downs and practices six days a week.
