IT is hard to know what to expect from Marlow RFC this season.

In the last two weeks they have knocked a team from a higher league out of the Bucks Cup and overpowered a strong Aylesbury side in the Southern Counties North.

Against that though, there is their defeat to bottom side Alchester the week before while other shock losses have also punctuated their season.

Head coach Richard Kinsey said: “It just depends on player availability.

“We are not a professional club and the players make themselves available when it fits into their lives.

“They are committed when they play, but you’re never going to get that consistency of selection.”

They got somewhere near their strongest team for last weekend’s match with Aylesbury, who have been among the early pace-setters this season and are still one of the teams expected to challenge for the title.

But a hat-trick of tries from Matt Saunders plus another score from second row Paul Martin proved enough in 32-13 victory that took Kinsey’s men above their opponents into third place.

He said: “The boys played really well on Saturday against a good Aylesbury side.

“I know their coach, Dave Larnham, from our Wasps days, but we were just hungrier than them on the day and it was good to get four tries as well.”

Marlow are now gearing up for a double derby, with Beaconsfield in the league on Saturday followed by High Wycombe in the semi-final of the Bucks Cup the following weekend.

Marlow trounced High Wycombe 36-6 at the start of the season, but the Kingsmead club have improved since then and Kinsey is expecting a much different match.

First up though, they have to negotiate a trip to Beaconsfield.

Kinsey said: “They will have what they normally have, a controlled set of forwards and decent half backs. They like to play attractive, controlled rugby so it should be a good game.”

Regarding his own team’s availability, he added: “I haven’t got a clue yet.”
