It was a case of job done for High Wycombe on Saturday as a professional performance saw off league whipping boys Alchester 29-0.

First half tries from Peter Partis and Greg Butters were converted by Joe Openshaw, who also kicked a penalty as the visitors built up a 17-0 lead by half-time.

Alchester have won just one league match all season but provided stern resistance at the start of the second half before scores from David Price and Stephen Philpot earned Wycombe a bonus point.

Head coach Mark Barry thought his side had done all that was expected of them from a trip to the side propping up the Southern Counties North table.

He said: “No disrespect to Alchester but we expected to win. It was just a case of us going there, getting the win and hopefully getting the bonus point and coming back with no injuries. Everything was achieved that we set out to do.

“Unfortunately they’re bottom of the league, we’re at the top of the league and sometimes you just have to be honest and go ‘we are better than them so let’s prove it and get out of here’.

“Fair play to Alchester they tried to make it scrappy and, like any team at the bottom of the league, were scrapping for points. The boys held their composure and we got the four tries and a bonus point win. They didn’t get close to crossing our line so it was a good performance all round.”

Wycombe are looking increasingly likely to finish the season as champions having lost just one league match since September – racking up 12 wins in the process. They hold a six-point lead over second place Aylesbury and with just six games left Barry is pleased that his team have their fate in their own hands for the run-in.

“All we can do is look after ourselves,” he said. “We’re in a fantastic position where we don’t have to rely on any teams making mistakes.

“We’re at the top of the league and if we look after ourselves and play as well as we can play, then we should win (the league). Out of the next six teams we play only one have beaten us and that was Marlow.

“They beat us right at the very beginning of the season, everyone else we’ve beaten. We know we can do it. I know a few teams we’ve played against may have had bad days or whatever, but you can only beat what’s in front of you.”

Kingsmead hosts the Intermediate Cup regional final on Saturday when Salisbury come to town. The visitors are second in the Southern Counties South table, and Barry is expecting a tough match.

He said: “They’re certainly not going to be any mugs. They’ve scored a lot of points this season and are a good attacking side.

“With games like these you can’t think too much about them you just have to put your team out and try to play your game against them. It’s a one-off game in every way, shape and form. We’re not going to play them again this season, it’s a cup game and it’s a winner takes all scenario.”
