Gary Meakin was adamant Beaconsfield SYCOB should have had “six or seven” goals against Leighton Town in their bottom of the table battle on Saturday.

As it was the Rams found a way past the home goalkeeper only once and were made to settle for a point which left them hovering above the drop zone in Southern One Central.

Victor Osubu was chief tormentor against Leighton, and the striker spurned two opportunities before firing his side in front after 14 minutes – his second goal in three matches.

Aaron Berry struck a post and the visitors missed a plethora of chances before, with just ten minutes left, Brendan Hazlett was picking the ball out of the net as the hosts snatched an equaliser.

Becky manager Meakin said: “It was one of those days where we wouldn’t be able to physically create that many chances again and not score more than one goal.

“We said at half-time that unless we take our chances to kill the game that it invites pressure and it will happen, and it did. Their second shot on goal went into the net.

“It’s our own fault but we played well. On one side you think that you’ve got to criticise because you haven’t won the game, but on the other hand the only thing they’ve done wrong is not put the ball in the net and the rest of the performance was fantastic.”

Osubu has been in fine form since rejoining Beaconsfield from Burnham in January – a club he followed his current boss to after Meakin’s appointment at The Gore in May of last year.

The striker has been amongst the goals on his return to Holloways Park, and Meakin believes he will play an important role in the club’s bid to avoid relegation.

“He scored again and that’s what he’s in the side to do. We signed him so that he can enjoy his football and score us some goals, and that’s what he’s doing at the moment. He’s doing well,” he said.

“If he can keep scoring then he’ll be very important. He gives us that bit of pace that we lack. If there’s one thing that opposition hate it’s out and out pace and that’s what he’s got. As long as he keeps ticking over with the goals then that’s fine.”

Another basement battle beckons tomorrow when SYCOB make the trip to bottom of the pile North Greenford looking put further daylight between themselves and the relegation zone.

With 24 points on the board Beaconsfield are six above the bottom two at present, and Meakin is confident that they’ll be further clear by Saturday evening. He said: “If we carry on doing what we’re doing then we should win the game. I know about North Greenford, I’ve been there a few times and I know it’s all changed, but it will be another pitch that won’t be great and we’ll deal with it. And this time hopefully we’ll put the ball in the net.”
