Royal Grammar School pupil and budding fencer Rafael Rhys Pollitt has bought an impressive haul of medals back to Bucks.

The year seven student has secured top three finishes in all three of the prestigious tournaments at which has competed, and follows his qualification for the British Youth Championships which take place in May.

Pollitt travelled to Southampton on February 7 for the GB Youth Series and fought his way to a bronze medal at the competition.

The 12-year-old then advanced to Bristol where he swatted away all comers to take gold in the Leon Paul Junior Series (LPJS) tournament on February 21.

And on March 1 Pollitt added another bronze medal to his ever expanding collection at another LPJS event, this time held in Truro on March 1.

His performances have propelled him to number one in the LPJS under-13 boys foil rankings, over 12 points ahead of his nearest competitor.

The youngster’s victories taste all the sweeter after overcoming a knee injury sustained earlier in the year.

He said: “I was worried I’d have to stop competing, but I’ve been given the most amazing support from both my coach, Dominique Szokolovics and my school, where my teachers have been helping me train in our dedicated fitness suite to fight back to form.”

Director of Sport at the Royal Grammar School, Liam Doubler, underlined how hard the school works to support its sporting talent. “At RGS our high-calibre staff and impressive sports facilities mean we’re able to consistently nurture exactly this kind of excellence in our young elite athletes,” he said.
