Simon Tattersall hailed Beaconsfield’s victory against Royal Wootton Bassett on Saturday as their “best performance of the season”.

The head coach was effusive in his praise of his team’s display after watching them fight back from a half-time deficit to triumph 29-8.

It was only Becky’s second win on their travels this season and it came against a team who are firmly in the hunt for promotion from the Southern Counties North division.

“I’m really, really proud of the players and how they approached the game,” said Tattersall.

“It was one of those days when it would have been very easy for us to have gone down there and had a nice day out with a good trip home.

“They guys worked hard in training, they went about their game very professionally and played really, really well. I was very happy with them, and it was certainly our best performance of the season.”

Beaconsfield trailed 8-3 at the break with just a Rob Freeman penalty to show for their first half efforts, but a four try blitz of Bassett in the second half propelled the visitors to victory.

Two tries from Callum Wilkinson and one each from Jack Hockin and Connor O’Brien earned a bonus point for Becky, with Freeman converting three of them from the tee.

Six times this season Beaconsfield have picked up losing bonus points, but Tattersall felt they were deserved winners in their penultimate league fixture of the season.

He said: “We were playing against a team that were joint second in the league, could easily be getting promoted, were playing at home and not only did we score four tries but we kept them down to only one try.

“After that they didn’t really look like scoring again. It’s a shame it has come so late, but hopefully it shows the guys what they are capable of. Some of the boys who were given a run out made a statement and that’s a positive for us moving forward.”

Tattersall wished also to congratulate High Wycombe on their “thoroughly deserved” title triumph before saying that his team still have something to fight for heading into their final game of the campaign against Stow-on-the-Wold on April 18.

Becky head into their last fixture knowing that a win will see them finish eighth in the table, while a loss against the team who beat them 31-16 in the first match of the season could see them end up third bottom.

“We want to finish eighth; we want to finish the season on a high,” he said.

“We’ve got a big ladies’ day event at the club on that day and we want to make it as successful as possible. We want to play some decent rugby and hopefully finish the season with a win.”
