Wycombe District Swimming Club won the county championship for the first time in nearly decade after blitzing their opponents.

The team amassed nearly double the amount claimed by their nearest challengers as they stormed their way to taking the Top Male and Female Trophies in the Berkshire and South Buckinghamshire County Championships.

Wycombe District claimed the coveted awards for the first time since 2006 as 39 club members took medals at the championships.

The club amassed 1917 points in total, with the boys collecting 1125 points to win the Lambert Shield and the girls claiming 792 points to take the Parker Silver Cup. Second placed Reading finished trailing a long way behind Wycombe with 1,003 points and Maidenhead were even further back in third after finishing on 946 points.

Luke Thomas was crowned county champion of the 400m and 1,500m freestyle and 200m breaststroke at senior level, with Liam Jones taking the 50m backstroke and butterfly titles and Millie Sansome the 50m backstroke.

James Eddy was the star man at junior level as he took the county champion spots in the 100m and 50m freestyle, backstroke and butterfly races, while Sansome followed her success at senior level by winning the junior championships in the 50m backstroke, 100m backstroke and 200m breaststroke.

In the Open relays Wycombe won five out of the six titles on offer and there were a further five podium positions from the club's B and C relay teams – meaning Wycombe claimed 10 of the 18 podium positions.

What made the team's achievements all the sweeter was the fact the relays took place at the club's home pool at Handy Cross.

The club has gone from strength to strength over the last two and half years under the leadership of Olympic Coach and WDSC Head Coach Kevin Brooks and assistant - and England Talent Coach - Craig Oliver, and all members of the coaching team.

Brooks said: "This year’s championships were a great achievement for the club. To achieve top overall club in the county is quite something, and by such an impressive margin.

"This demonstrates all the hard work that has gone into WDSC over the last two years from the coaches, committee, volunteers and of course, the incredible commitment and efforts from the swimmers - well done."
