The ladies of Amersham & Chalfont will become the first team in the hockey club’s history to contest a national final when they travel to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park on Saturday.

The first XI reached the last two of the England Hockey Women’s Vase competition after a dramatic victory against Yateley on penalty strokes in the semi-final.

Surrey was the destination for the final four match-up and those present saw Emma Hewitt put the visitors ahead in the first half.

Yateley equalised in the second half to take the game to a nerve jangling shoot-out in which goalkeeper Liz Williamson made herself the hero.

The stopper saved the hosts’ final attempt to ensure victory after Cathy Hollis, Rebecca Griffiths, Catherine Watson and Sarah Wood had all converted their penalty strokes.

Earlier in the tournament Winchester had been dispatched in the first round 5-0, while the team then overcame Mid Somerset to reach the last four.

Oxted are their opponents in the final and, unlike A&C, have a proven pedigree in the competition having won it in 2013 before finishing as runners-up last year.

“There’s no doubting that we'll be going into the final as underdogs given Oxted’s recent history in the competition, but if commitment and hard work count for anything then the girls have an outside chance,” said coach Shay O’Connell.

“There’s a lot of quality within our squad but little experience of these games, so dealing with that pressure will go a long way to getting a win.

“Both teams like to attack and score so we’re fully expecting an exciting game of hockey.”

While the odds may be against them the team will certainly be able to count upon the support of the large number who will be in the stands to see them contest the final.

“The support of the Club has been fantastic from the moment we made the final and taking support in excess of 200 supporters will I’m sure drive the girls on, and help them to make a little bit of history for such a young club.”
