Graham Malcolm reflected on an “unbelievable” season after guiding Flackwell Heath to a league and cup double.

The Heathens manager watched from the sidelines as his team swept aside all comers en route to winning the Hellenic Premier Division before they got their hands on the Wycombe Senior Cup for the second season in succession last Wednesday.

A brace from top scorer Gavin James and one each for Joel Jacobs and Dan Rapley fired the Reds to victory against Penn & Tylers Green, rounding off Malcolm’s second season in charge at Wilks Park perfectly.

“At the moment everywhere we go people say congratulations, which is very nice and very humbling,” he said.

“It’s just nice to receive some plaudits for our club. It’s what the chairman strives for, it’s what the committee strives for and it’s just wonderful.

“I bumped into Slough Town players and the first thing they said was ‘congratulations on winning the league’ because it doesn’t happen very often.”

James, who notched 38 league goals this season, got the scoring started against Penn at Marlow’s Oak Tree Road ground after 14 minutes before Joel Jacobs doubled the lead.

After half-time another goal for James made it 3-0 before Penn’s Jordan Gumbs was sent-off, although the ten men pulled one back when Geroge Weller scored.

Heath midfielder Dan Rapley put the finishing touches on the scoreline late on – a result which Malcolm felt his side deserved.

He said: “It was a very close game for the first 15-20 minutes in which they hit the woodwork twice and definitely deserved a goal from their various attempts.

“We weren’t dominant but we were comfortable in the game although a goal for them would have changed the momentum. It didn’t happen for them and then eventually our quality came through.

“I felt like we were the better side, but they certainly did, as expected, have a go at us. Over the course of the game we got our play going and got our four goals.”

One man who missed out on Flackwell’s cup win was second top scorer and Penn old boy Dan Burnell, who missed the game through suspension.

The striker was considering quitting the game before joining the club in October and he has since gone on to play a big part in Heath’s success with 32 league goals to his name.

Burnell has played in the Southern League with Chesham United in the past and Malcolm hopes the forward will stick with the Reds when they begin life in Southern One Central – if the club’s wishes are granted – next season.

“He came to the club at the right time. As he got fitter and more confident I think he became a bit of a talisman for us and it just completed the team.

“He gave us another outlet that we may of needed as the season progressed. That’s football sometimes. You think you’ve got your side, you think you’ve got the way you’re going to play and then something happens.

“A player comes into your squad and quite often it doesn’t work but this one did. I’m pleased for the lad and hopefully he’ll stay for next year. What he’s done is put himself back out there so I think he’ll get a few calls.”
