High Wycombe Hockey Club’s under-16s won the Home Counties finals competition in Guildford on Sunday after seeing off local rivals Marlow to win the trophy.

The tournaments semi-finals, which were held at Broadwater School, saw Wycombe drawn against Teddington and Marlow pit their wits against Oxted.

Lukas Qureshi put his side ahead against Teddington in their last four clash as he pounced on a loose ball and lashed it home before their opponents equalised shortly after.

A tidy finish from Dan Lindars put Wycombe back in front before Wills Hatton wrapped up the victory with a third goal after being teed up by Callum Addison.

Marlow also progressed after booking their place in the final thanks to a 2-1 triumph against Oxted.

A scintillating first half performance from Wycombe had the game tied up by the interval and they were ahead after less than sixty seconds.

Hatton netted his second of the afternoon with a fine individual strike to put his side in front before he had a hand in his team’s second goal.

Just as Hatton was about to send an effort at goal he was upended, giving Aran Johal the chance to score from the penalty spot – an opportunity which he didn’t waste.

A third goal arrived before half-time as Dylan Lim-Hon lifted the ball over the advancing ’keeper to leave their opponents with a mountain to climb.

Marlow pulled one back in the second half but they couldn’t pull off a comeback and when the final whistle sounded the score stood at 3-1.

Victory caps a tremendous season for Wycombe, who celebrated winning the Mercian Premier League this season.

The win also came without the help of Harry Bennett, who was away on international duty with England.

While the youngster couldn’t help his club side in Guildford he was playing a part for his country as they won their three match series against Ulster 2-1.

Lilleshall hosted the matches, which took place on 2-4 May, and saw Bennett play his part in all three games – the first of which ended in a 3-3 draw.

Victory was secured via 5-2 win in the second meeting and a 3-2 success in the final match-up.
