Chesham United’s Connor Wood will travel the world in the hope earning a professional contract after he was invited to train with the Nike Academy.

The full-back, who was voted as the Generals Young Player of the Season, was one of 23 players selected to train at St George’s Park with the academy after impressing in the Nike Most Wanted Global Showcase.

That was the final stage before he was invited to join the academy after he won the UK Showcase in Manchester in April.

The successful squad of players will train full-time at the England national team’s base and travel the globe playing games as they look to catch the eye of a professional club.

Wood, who is 18-years-old, joined Chesham in 2014 and has also represented the club in the Football Conference Youth Alliance league, where they finished second behind Brentford.

Chesham boss Andy Leese said: “It really is a fantastic achievement but no surprise to us as we see Connor every week.

“I have spoken with Connor and wished him well. I couldn't quite convince him that he would be better off at The Meadow rather than travelling the world and playing football.”

The Generals are also launching their own academy, which will be based at The Meadow, for next season and they are currently recruiting scholars for its launch in September.

All details can be found under the ‘Academy’ section of the club’s website.
