High Wycombe continued their excellent start to the Home Counties Division One season by thrashing Tring Park on Saturday.

Former Surrey all-rounder James Benning was the star of the show, taking three wickets before a knock of 64 from just 47 balls helped Wycombe to a seven wicket win.

Victories against Burnham and Oxford had got new captain Nathan Hawkes’ reign off to the perfect start and they followed it up with another strong showing away to Tring.

The hosts, who featured three Bucks CCC players among their ranks, lost county opener Robin Pritchard for just 12 after Benning had him caught by Gavin Baker.

Benning then picked up two wickets in quick succession to leave the home side reeling at 52-3.

County captain Michael Payne steadied the ship with a knock of 36 but he saw wickets fall at regular intervals throughout the innings with support in short supply for the Tring skipper.

Wycombe leg spinner Uzair Amjaid, who has already earned his maiden County cap this season, ripped through the middle order, taking three wickets for just six runs from his seven overs.

The 16-year-old’s exploits helped bowl Tring out with one over remaining in the innings with the hosts having amassed 116.

Benning didn’t hang around in the run chase and after Baker went for one, the 32-year-old strode to the crease and proceeded to hit ten fours and a six en route to his 64.

After opener Adam Hose (17) and Benning departed it was left to skipper Hawkes (27*) and Geroge Russell (3*) to take Wycombe over the line after just 22.2 overs.

Victory leaves Hawkes and his team second in Division One with an away game against Reading to come on Saturday.

The performance of youngster Amjaid was particularly eye catching and was rewarded with a call-up to the Bucks team for their Unicorn Counties Twenty20 Championship match against Bedfordshire at 10am on Sunday.

Three hours later they take on Berkshire, with the two winners meeting in the final at 4pm - the winners of the final game will advance to the next stage of the competition.

Also included in the squad were Chesham brothers Jason and Matt Rance.

There is also a debut for youngster Jonathan Burden, who is a fast bowler for Wycombe.

George Russell completes the Wycombe contingent in the squad and there is also a place for Gerrards Cross captain Matt Watson.

On Monday, Wycombe were knocked out of the Home Counties Twenty20 Cup after falling just six runs short against Banbury.

The hosts set Wycombe a target of 184 to win – a total which they didn’t look like getting anywhere near when Harry Lane (0), Edmund Casterton (3) and Hawkes (0) left the score at 6-3.

Russell injected some life into the run chase with 39 off 20 balls to help supplement a fluent 75 from Hose.

Cameron Parsons finished on 40 not out but his innings wasn’t enough and they ended their 20 overs on 177-7.
