Two local schools competed at the National Schools’ Regatta in Nottingham last weekend.

Great Marlow School and Sir William Borlase’s Grammar School Boat Club took part in the championships, which is the largest regatta for juniors in Great Britain.

The Borlase boys’ quad of Chris Lawrie, Joe Wolfin, Fraser Russell and Rufus Biggs, three of whom are GB rowers, took gold in the championship quad sculls in the standout result achieved by either school.

Lawrie and Russell took silver in the double sculls while the girls’ eight team of Megan Barry, Ell Capel-Smith, Georgia Mulraine, Kelsey Stoddart, Ellen Roberts, Katie Bruce, Yasmin Ryman-King and Ella Reike also returning home with silver medals.

Outgoing director of rowing Robin Dowell, who is leaving to take up a post with team GB, said: “National Schools’ Regatta was a great event for us with both our experienced and inexperienced crews putting in a tremendous effort.

“The girls’ eight, the boys’ quad and the Boys’ Double stood out as our medal boats but the whole squad performed at their best and showed a huge deal of potential for the rest of the season and beyond. I couldn’t have asked for more from the team.” Great Marlow’s girls’ coxed four crew of Amy Pyle, Laura Cook, Pippa Young, Rachael Pearce and cox Georgina Agar achieved their schools’ best result of the weekend, finishing second after seeing off Headington to finish behind Maidenhead Rowing Club.

That proved to be the only top three finish for the school, although two more crews narrowly missed out on medals after strong performances in their respective finals.

The girls’ four of Fran Reynolds, Georgina Smyth, Lizzie Harper and Leanna Beswick came third in their semi-final before eventually finishing sixth in the final.

Marlow’s boys’ eight missed out on a medal by just one place as Westminster beat them into third to steal bronze away from them.
