Five Buckinghamshire based athletes are set to compete in the inaugural European Games.

The competition, which gets under-way when the opening ceremony takes place on Friday and runs until June 12, is the first of its kind and will see 6,000 athletes from around the continent gather in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Ed McKeever, Louisa Sawers, Ryan Bartlett, Amber Hill and Abbey Ling are all set to take part in their respective sports.

Wooburn Green resident McKeever is the most decorated of the Bucks contingent, having won gold at the 2012 London Olympics in the Canoe Sprint - an event which he begins on Monday and will hope to take gold in the final on Tuesday.

Fellow canoe sprinter Sawers will be looking to replicate her first place finish at the World Championships last year when she goes in the K15000m final on Tuesday.

Bartlett, who hails from Chalfont St Giles, is a two-time European champion and he will compete in the Acrobatic Gymnastics which starts on Wednesday.

High Wycombe resident Ling and Hill, who trains at the E.J. Churchill shooting ground in Lane End, are both part of the shooting team. Their events begin on Tuesday.
