Tyrell Hatton warmed up for this year’s Open championships with a solid performance in the Scottish Open.

The 23-year-old finished six-under par at Gullane Golf Club to tie for 22nd place, leaving him six shots behind tournament winner Rickie Fowler.

Hatton has now made the cut in seven of the last nine European Tour events he has entered as he heads to St Andrew’s looking to make it past the first two rounds for the first time, having shot scores of 75 and 77 in his rookie season in 2014.

The former Great Marlow School pupil got his first round off to the perfect start at the Scottish Open on Thursday as he birdied four and bogeyed one of the opening seven holes.

Two more dropped shots on the back nine and a birdie on 16 left him two under for the day.

The second round saw Hatton card a round of one-under before he endured his toughest 18 holes of the event in the third round on Saturday.

Three bogeys were carded en route to a one-over round of 71 as the Harleyford Golf Club member fell back to two-under for the tournament.

He responded in fantastic style, however, producing some of his best golf as he holed five birdies, including a three on the par four 18th, and one bogey to finish the tournament at six-under par.

Fellow High Wycombe golfer Luke Donald tied for seventh place, also carding a final round of four-under to finish just three shots adrift of the eventual winner.

After his final round on Sunday, Hatton tweeted: “Played well today and holed a few putts, nice to finish the tournament with my best round of the week! Now onto The Open.”
