Tyrrell Hatton missed the cut at The Open for the third year running after a second round of 76 dropped him down the leaderboard at St Andrews.

The 23-year-old was in prime position to make the cut after his previous two failures, having carded a two-under 70 for the first 18 holes but a four-over second round ended his challenge.

Gale force winds and torrential rain combined to disrupt the tournament, meaning that Hatton only started his second round late on Friday evening before completing the round on Saturday.

Three bogeys on the front nine alongside one birdie had seen Hatton slide back to level par, which would have been enough to see make the cut if his struggled hadn’t continued on the back nine.

Two more bogeys and a double bogey ended his hopes of competing in Sunday’s third round.
