Saif Zaib is set to feature on the international stage again after receiving a call-up to represent England under-19s against Australia.

The 17-year-old, who played for hometown club High Wycombe in the Home Counties Premier before being snapped up by county side Northants in October last year, was named in two separate squads for both a five-match one-day series and a one-off four-day match against the Aussies.

It’s further recognition for the former RGS pupil, who was part of an England under-17 tour to Dubai in February where he finished as the top run scorer in a three-match series against Pakistan.

Zaib is yet to feature for the Northants first team, but the young all-rounder was included in the squad for a T20 game against Yorkshire last week.

The left-hander has played most of his cricket for the club’s second XI, and a knock of 81 against Unicorns last time out underlined his potential.

Northants head coach, David Ripley, said: “We are delighted that Saif has been selected for the England under-19s.

“He has worked very hard over the last 12 months on every part of his game. Phil Rowe and the rest of the coaching and medical team have worked very closely with him to ensure he is in the best shape to take this great opportunity.”

Zaib will join up with the squad later this month ahead of a two-day warm-up match against Unicorns on July 30 before the four-day match against Australia begins on August 4.

The five one-day internationals then commence, with the first match of the series taking place on August 11.

Zaib will be hoping that strong performances against the tourists will put him in contention for a spot in the England squad who will travel to Bangladesh for the Under-19 World Cup in February.
