Gerrards Cross emerged triumphant from their local battle against Amersham on Saturday after recording an emphatic 135-run win.

Matt Watson’s team move up to second place in Division Two of the Home Counties League, thanks in large part to his bowlers as they skittled Amersham out for their lowest ever total.

The visitors’ previous low score was 75 all out against Banbury last season, but they mustered only 71 runs after being set 206 to win on Saturday.

Only two Amersham players – Maduka Liyanapathiranage (28) and Chritopher Cann (15) – made it into double figures as the rest of the order crumbled around them.

Bucks bowler Dan Hampton returned figures of 3-26, picking up the wickets of opener Ed Bowcock (7), Andrew Viney (4) and Cann.

But he was outshone by the exploits of Jamie Hoddle, whose swing bowling accounted for four batsmen at a cost of only 38 runs.

The Cross seamer, who is son of former England manager Glenn, removed Bruce Friderichs (4), Paul Langley (0), Hugh Jackson (0) and Amersham skipper Luke Jackson (2).

Elliot Green’s three maiden overs produced one wicket while spinner Joe Bracey claimed two victims from five balls to finish the innings in the 21st over.

The day had started promisingly for Amersham, who, after winning the toss and electing to field, restricted Cross to a modest 206 all out from 58 overs.

Opener Malkeet Dhaliwal top scored with 52 off 62 balls, featuring ten fours, while Hoddle (30), Watson (40) and Hampton (34) all contributed well.

Amersham kept the run rate below four an over as Liyanapathiranage bowled an economical 25-over spell, conceding only 56 runs and taking an astonishing eight wickets.

Jack Rogers (2-50) took the other two wickets but it proved to be in vain as the home side romped to a comfortable win.

The victory takes Cross up to second in Home Counties Division Two, 22 points ahead of seventh place Amersham.
