Tyrrell Hatton got off to a poor start after his opening round at the Portugal Masters this week.

The Marlow golfer currently sits 32nd in the European Tour rankings and targeted a strong showing in the tournament at the Oceanico Victoria Golf Club to continue his rise.

But Hatton struggled to a round of five-over-par in a disappointing start to the event.

The tournament pits Hatton against some of the best golfers in Europe, including a four major winners in the form of Darren Clarke, Padraig Harrington, Martin Kaymer and Paul Lawrie.

Hatton, who has been a member of Harleyford Golf Club since the age of 11, was in good form in the British Masters at Woburn Golf Club at the weekend where he finished 13th.

At nine under par Hatton finished six shots off eventual winner Matthew Fitzpatrick, while his 67 in the final round was the joint fourth lowest score of the tournament.

Had he not carded a slightly disappointing 71 in his opening round Hatton could easily have finished in the top ten.
