Tyrell Hatton finished day one of the Turkish Airlines Open in tied 17th place after briefly being tied for second earlier in the day.

Hatton shot a round of 69 to card a respectable three under par at the close of play on day one in Atalya and sits three shots behind third placed Chris Wood.

The 24-year-old, who was born in High Wycombe and has been a member of marlow's Harleyford Golf Club since he was 11, has been making steady progress up the European Tour rankings and currently sits 31st.

He is tied in 17th with 11 others and has given himself a decent chance of breaking into the top 10 throughout the rest of the weekend. 

The day though belonged to South Afirca’s Jako Van Zyl who played brilliantly to finish 11 under par and lead the tournament heading into the second day.

His closest challenger is Lee Westwood who is three shots back while World Number One Rory McIlroy is one of seven players tied in fourth on -5.
