Wycombe District Swimming Club’s swimmers were in fine form at the British Swimming Championships with their participants breaking several records.

WDSC Head Coach Kevin Brooks was pleased with how his swimmers stepped up to the mark at the meeting.

Brooks said: “It’s been another great target meet for Wycombe District.”

“The club has proved once again that all of its swimmers step up when it matters; performing strongly on the National stage.”

James McFadzen qualified for three finals with superb personal best (PB) times with his best result coming in the 200m individual medley where he set a new lifetime best.

The 17 year old was the fastest junior at the competition, a year under the top junior age and now waits for “consideration” from the Great Britain Junior Team.

His performance was capped off when he broke all the Senior County Records for the backstroke, wiping out former WDSC and Olympic swimmer Simon Burnett and set a new 200m individual medley record. A record previously held by 2012 and 2016 Olympian Andew Willis.

While McFadzen was the standout swimmer for WDSC, many of the club's other members also had fine events.

One such example was James Baxter as the 18-year-old produced a number of strong swims.

Personal best times of 57.41 and 02.07.74 earned Baxter a place in both the 100 and 200m Junior Butterfly finals.

He was not finished there though and came out with an even better personal best time of 02.06.27 in the 200 final.

Sophie Millen was competing at the event for the first time and qualified in all three of her events, also with personal best times, the 200, 400 and 800 metre freestyle.

She narrowly missed out on a Junior Final spot in the 200 but now turns her attention to the Great East Open Water Swim in June, where she is placed for possible European Junior selection.

James Eddy set a new personal best in the 100m backstroke heats and a time of 57.53 seconds in the final ensured top spot in the 16 years ranking.

Eddy’s 200m backstroke performance catapulted him to number one in the National Rankings before breaking the 100 and 200 backstroke county records and the 100m freestyle County Junior record.

Elsewhere, Millie Sansome lowered her personal best in the 100m backstroke, just missing out on a final spot.

Yusuke Legard was also in action and qualified for the 50m freestyle with a personal best and a time of 23.35 in the heat led him to the “Target Tokyo” Junior final where he lowered his personal best further to 23.28 coming fourth.

There is a huge summer of swimming ahead of the young swimmers and head coach Brooks believes this event has given them some great preparation.

“This has been great preparation for the National Summer meets coming up in July and August,” he said.

“The club should be very proud of these high achievers and all swimmers in the club should be inspired by what they can achieve here at Wycombe.”
