Dan Newton proved to be Amersham Hill Second’s hero as took 7-24 to lead Amersham Hill Seconds to victory over Knotty Green Seconds.

After a heavy defeat last week Hill were looking for their first win of the season against a Knotty side which gained promotion to the Chilterns Cricket League Division Four last season.

Newton’s rampant form saw him take a three wickets in his first two overs to reduce Knotty to 6-3.

Jack Patel batted well for Knotty as he attempted to salvage the desperate situation and was joined by big-hitting Tom Mason.

Mason would become Newton’s fourth victim as he fell for 22 before Hamza Shah and Anurag Abinashi both struck.

Anish Patel hit a defiant 20, but almost inevitably fell to Newton who then went on to wrap up the Knotty innings after Chris Tucker had got in out the act with a wicket of his own.

Needing just 91 to win, Hill would be forgiven for expecting an easy afternoon, but they made a torrid start to their chase.

First Newton was run out for a duck and another run out saw Samantho Benson D’Costa bizarrely dismissed for 10.

He falsely believed the ball had gone for four and subsequently strolled back to his crease only to fall short of making up his ground.

Brothers Jonnie and Mike Cooper then established some remanence of composure as they took Hill to 54 before Jonnie fell for 30.

Ron Hedley then joined Mike in the middle to lead Hill to a comfortable seven wicket win. They take on Great Kingshill Seconds on Saturday.
