Ben Smith put together his most impressive professional boxing performance to date as he comfortably beat Fonz Alexander at London’s iconic Copper Box Arena.

The High Wycombe fighter, 19, won all four rounds against the journeyman Alexander to come away with a 40-36 point victory.

Alexander’s physicality could have posed problems for Smith, who still boasts a 100 per cent record from his three professional bouts, but he proved too good for his opponent and controlled proceedings from the off.

The first round saw Smith use his jab efficiently to keep Alexander at bay as he picked his shots smartly to take the round with ease.

While he was by no means expecting to get a knockout, Smith had expressed the pleasure he would take from picking up the first stoppage of his career heading into the fight.

It is unsurprising then that the Mark Tibbs coached teenager opened up in the second round with a flurry of devastating shots and powerful combinations.

The onslaught continued into the third as Alexander’s objective became less about throwing punches and more about surviving.

He did just that and held out for the bell to take the fight into a fourth round in front of a crowd which included names such as Ricky Hatton and Prince Naseem.

Smith could sense the chance for a stoppage was there and went after Alexander from the first bell to the last of the final round.

He threw a number of combinations to work Alexander’s body and head, but the 28-year-old is not a fighter who goes down easily and in fairness to him he defended himself well to make it to the end of the fight.

The rest was a mere formality as Smith was announced as the winner on a night when he never expected to lose.

He will now look ahead to his next fight which will take place on Thursday, June 9 at York Hall.
