The British Formula One Sidecar Championship reached its second round over the weekend and High Wycombe racer Brian Gray was looking to impress at Brands Hatch.

Gray, who is competing alongside 18-year-old Adam Christie, came into the race weekend having secured a ninth place finish at the Oulton Park season opener.

Having changed their engine, respective 12th and 15th place finishes at Brands Hatch ensured the duo maintained their decent start to the campaign, and left Gray content with the result.

He said: “I’m really pleased with the new engine. We still have a lot of work to do but it is really quick and I’m hoping for big things from it.”

Christie added: “It’s been a great weekend. The engine is so quick but I know we can develop it with the sidecar.”

The two 15 lap races came either side of a British Superbike event which guaranteed a big attendance for the sidecar races.

Both Gray and Christie had put in a large amount of work on their vehicle in the build up to the race and were hoping to reap the rewards of their efforts.

A competent qualifying session saw them secure a 15th place spot on the grid on Saturday morning.

They were by no means content to rest easy on their position and an average speed of 83.65mph throughout the race allowed them to climb three places and finish 12th.

Sunday’s race proved to be incredibly tight as competitors battled for position in front of an expecting and packed Brands Hatch crowd.

The competitive nature of the race saw a number of position changes early on before a crash on Paddock Hill brought the safety car out.

Gray and Christie did well to maintain their composure throughout the confusion and came out the other side of a frantic race in 15th.

The results leave the pair in 12th in the overall championship standings, but they will likely lose some places as they miss the next meeting in Scotland.

They will, therefore, return to action at Norfolk’s Snetterton circuit in July.
