A superb century from Shelvin Gumbs was not enough for Bucks as they were held to a draw in their Unicorns Counties Championship match with Bedfordshire.

Heavy rain played a part in the result as an entire day was lost to the foul weather conditions which disrupted play throughout the three-day match.

Both sides opted to forgo an innings in order to try and force a result as Bedfordshire chose to bat first.

They made a far from unattainable 241-4 to give Bucks a sniff at claiming a victory, but a poor start saw them slip to 18-3 before Gumbs came to the crease.

The Tring Park man restored an air of confidence to the Bucks effort as he made precisely 100 in a 144-run fourth wicket stand with Gerrards Cross’ Dan Hampton.

More cheap wickets towards the end of Bucks’ innings gave the momentum back to Bedfordshire, but Hampton’s 60 not out kept them at arm’s length as Bucks finished on 188-7.

Alex Woodland, who also plays for Cross, was handed his championships debut and opened the batting.

Bucks’ next championship match takes place against Cumberland between Sunday, July 3 and Tuesday, July 5.
