Fine bowling displays from James Rendell and Mike Stafford proved inconsequential for Beaconsfield as they were held to a frustrating draw by Royal Ascot.

Despite restricting Ascot to just 102 runs, Beaconsfield could not prevent their opponents from holding out for a battling draw.

Beaconsfield’s openers, Jason Harrison and Chris Kaye, did little to boost their side’s efforts early on with respective scores of 15 and one.

The early wobble did not deter Nilesh Odedra though and the number three’s 62 from 103 deliveries proved to be the foundation for his side’s effort.

A useful 43 from David Heavyside and Andrew Murray’s 28 added to Odedra’s score before all three men were snared by the dominant Kevin May.

May’s 4-56 underlined his importance to Ascot and he proved to be the most potent of their bowlers as only Will Ellison (1-24) and Mike Brown (1-29) claimed further wickets.

In fact, Beaconsfield’s failings were often of their own making as three of their number were run out.

With just 171-9 on the board, the home side would have to be economic with the ball to stand a chance of winning.

It was a task they lived up to admirably as they offered only five extras while regularly restricting Ascot’s chances to score.

The efforts of Stafford and Rendell were particularly influential as they dismissed the entire top seven between them.

Stafford finished with 4-39 for his troubles while Rendell also took a quartet of wickets with 4-53 in a potent twin attack.

Only Jack Kendall (28), Andrew Murray (25) and Nick Sweetman (20) made any sort of an impact on the scoring and the Ascot innings was punctuated by four ducks.

They fought on gamely though as Nick Wiglett’s seven from 28 deliveries allowed them to fight off the final wicket and finish on 102-9.

Beaconsfield remain in the relegation zone ahead of the daunting visit of league leaders Henley Seconds on Saturday.
