A competitive field of international crews could not prevent Great Marlow School Boat Club (GMSBC) from prospering at the Reading Town Regatta.

The event saw a host of GMSBC boats take part and return with a number of positive results.

The performances pleased head coach Fergus Murison who praised his crews’ late season efforts.

He said: “As we reach the end of our summer season, all crews who have raced have done so with tremendous courage and commitment.

“As much as everyone wants to win medals, I am very proud of the progress that everyone at the club has made this year.”

Experienced GB pair Ross Honey and Ed Nunn were in fine form in Reading as they won the intermediate event with ease.

GMSBC’s J15 crew gave a good account of themselves to claim top spot in both the J15 race and the J16 coxed quads.

The wins will provide the crew with a positive boost ahead of the finale of the British Junior Championships, which take place in Nottingham in July.

There was further success for the school as their girls’ team took top spot in the J15 Octo with a commanding win.

Saturday’s Reading Regatta came just a day after the senior boys eight had qualified for the Henley Royal Regatta where they will take part in the Princess Elizabeth Cup on Wednesday.

It is the third year in a row in which the school has been involved in the prestigious event and this year’s event sees them take on Melbourne Grammar School.

Murison was delighted with the qualification and highlighted the importance of the club being involved in such a well-known event.

He said: “Without exception we have seen improvements in every year group and it is once again great for the club to be racing at Henley Royal Regatta.”
