WYCOMBE skipper Nathan Hawkes has backed his men to do the double – as they face their biggest weekend of the season.

They entertain Slough in the league on Saturday, looking to make up the seven-point gap on new Home Counties Premier League Division One leaders Finchampstead and then, on Sunday, they host Ealing in the last 16 of the National Club Championship.

Hawkes said: “It’s a massive weekend for us.”

He says his side have yet to find top form this season but, despite being below par, they are still in the running for three trophies, when you add the T20 into the mix as well.

Hawkes said: “If someone had said this is the position you are going to be in at the halfway stage of the season we would have bitten their hand off and the scary thing is that we have got there without playing anywhere near as well as we can do.

“If we gel and come together it’s quite frightening to think what we could achieve. We have had a few people hit bad form together so far and we haven’t really been at the races this season, but we are still in a great position.

“I fancy us for a league and cup double whether it’s the national or the T20. I think we have got the squad to do that and the team spirit is one of the best I have ever been involved in.”

After winning the Home Counties League last season, Wycombe have made a big play for the cups this season and are keen to put themselves on the national map.

But they couldn’t have picked out much tougher opponents than Ealing for their last 16 clash at London Road.

Ealing top their league but Wycombe have already beaten the two teams directly below the west Londoners in that league en-route to Sunday’s 45 overs per side showdown which has a place in the quarter-finals at stake.

Hawkes said: “Ealing are top of their league so this is an even tougher task. They have got a proven record in this competition and everyone will treat them with respect. It is all about what happens on the day. You only need one or two stand out performances.”

Hawkes himself showed he is running into form with 87 runs in last week’s disappointing league draw with lowly Reading, while Wycombe’s Mr Runs, Garth Davson, supplied another 50 at the top of the order as well.

Hawkes said: “It was nice to spend a little bit more time in the middle and if me and a couple of the others can help out Garth who knows.”

Wycombe have a full squad to choose from for both encounters
