It has been a breathless week so far with two tough, but ultimately rewarding games in three days with wins away at Colchester and at home to Crewe.

It was always going to be interesting to see how the boys would bounce back from such a devastating late defeat against Luton the previous week.

From the off at the Weston Homes Community Stadium, you could tell how hard the team were working for each other and were determined to remain solid and hard to break down.

I thought matchwinner Craig Mackail-Smith was a constant thorn for the home side to deal with and it was fantastic to see him grab the winner as he had been so close to getting that monkey of his back in his previous appearances.

When you have a front three of Craig, Nathan Tyson and Bayo, the experience really shines through and it was also brilliant to see Tys get on the scoresheet. His first goal for the club for 12 years!

At the other end, Scott Brown continued his recent superb form with a series of stunning saves to deny the U’s.

After a slightly shaky start to the season, Browny is now looking so assured and confident in goal and his performances lately have been top drawer.

I would say the likes of Craig and Browny are real unsung heroes who don’t get the plaudits that some of the other players do.

Having interviewed them both after, they really are just a great pair of blokes who are happy to wish the team success rather than themselves and that is testament to the characters Gareth has in his squad.

The Crewe game on Tuesday was an absolute humdinger.

Facing a team who suffered a 5-0 drubbing just three days before is never an easy task so for the Blues to get the three points was tremendous but they had to work so hard for it.

I thought that the boys were always on top and deservedly took the lead thanks to Craig but were dealt a sucker punch just before half-time when the visitors equalised with their first real chance.

Incredibly, Crewe took the lead but Wanderers were so valiant and if Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo had scored the goals that Michael Harriman and Tys did, they would be shown on repeat every hour on Sky Sports!

For me though Ebere Eze was man of the match. He set the place alight with his quick feet and his ability to glide past players as well as his vision.

Both Tys and Gareth heaped praise on the young man but also warned him to keep focused. If he does, he can go a long, long way.

Onto Barnet and the Bees won here last season just before Wanderers went on their amazing run in November and December.

They do have a few injury issues with the likes of John Akinde out but they still have a plethora of attacking options so they will be dangerous but the Blues have bounced back well from the Luton defeat and I am tipping another 2-1 win this weekend.

In other sport, our non-league sides continue to perform well with Marlow United celebrating an amazing 14-0 win over Taplow.

Also in boxing, it is great to see twins pick up belts on the same weekend. Courtney and Lewis Frimponjg both train at the Evolve Boxing Academy in Amersham and they picked up their Southern Area belts last weekend with brilliant successes.

With Ben Smith flying the flag for boxing in this area, it is brilliant to see other young, promising boxers following in his footsteps and climbing the rankings..

They clearly have a bright future in a sport where you have to have so much dedication and I certainly look forward to writing about more successes of there's in the next few months and years
