High Wycombe continued their upward curve with a 140-run demolition of Thame Town at home last weekend.

Thame won the toss and elected to field but immediately that decision backfired when young star Teddie Casterton and skipper Nathan Hawkes racked up a 188-run opening stand.

Hawkes was eventually dismissed for 90 off 109 balls when he was bowled by Hassam Mushtaq but Casterton continued on his merry way to record a classy 116.

The innings stuttered slightly once the openers were dismissed but Dan Marles hit a couple of boundaries to record 16 off 14 balls.

Wycombe ended their 50 overs on 266-4 to give the visitors a daunting total to chase.

Thame never looked like getting close as wickets tumbled at regular intervals with their top scorer, James Adams, left stranded on 28 not out.

The bowling hero was undoubtedly Jonathan Burden who picked up 5/28 from his 10 miserly overs with Cam Parsons collecting 3/22.

Hawkes spoke to the Bucks Free Press regarding the victory and although very pleased with the win he maintained that there are areas that still need to be improved.

He said: “We obviously got off to a great start with the bat but we were slightly disappointed with the total we ended up with after the start we had.

“We had a chat at the interval and wanted to make our mark with the ball and fortunately we did.

“The pitch was dead and our opening bowlers didn’t bowl that many dangerous deliveries but Jon came on first chance and picked up a fine five-fer.

“Jon has worked incredibly hard this winter and deserved the wickets and in the end, it was a really good performance and a fantastic win.

“However, there are still areas we need to work on. We are still bowling too many boundary balls and we need to make big totals regularly and make good starts count.

“Also the fielding has been an issue for a while now with too many dropped catches but it was a lot better on Saturday and I hope it can continue.”

After a very successful innings as opener against Chesham the previous Sunday, Hawkes remained in the number two position and he explained he was happy with current form.

He added: “I felt really good against Chesham and again here. The 90 I made was a really good innings and I always seem to bat well with Casterton and it was good to make it count.”

Hawkes heaped praise on the way his young opening partner has started the season and is looking forward to seeing how the 17-year-old progresses.

The Wycombe captain said: “For Teddie to win the Wisden Schools Cricketer of the Year was obviously a massive boost of confidence to him.

“His batting continues to grow and develop and he played a beautiful innings against Thame.

“For someone his age he plays very maturely, he has a good technique and excellent shot selection and, as I said, we do seem to gel well together.”
