THE man whose goal nudged Wycombe Wanderers to within a point of automatic promotion has urged his team-mates to go on and complete the job next week even though he won’t get a medal.

On loan Chelsea starlet Lee Sawyer crowned his eighth appearance for Wanderers with a vital late equaliser in Blues’ 1-1 draw at Port Vale on Saturday.

His 80th minute goal means Wanderers now only need a draw from their final game of the season at home to lowly Notts County on Saturday to secure promotion and end their five-year exile in the basement division.

But even though Sawyer’s first goal for the club has put Wanderers within touching distance of League One, he won’t receive a medal to mark his contribution.

Only players who have made 11 appearances during the campaign will qualify for the silverware and Sawyer has only appeared in eight games since arriving on loan.

If the 19-year-old midfielder plays against out-of-form County on Saturday he will still fall agonisingly short of qualifying for a medal – by two games.

But Sawyer, who has previously had loan spells at Southend United and Coventry, is only concentrating on matters on the pitch and was delighted to inch his team-mates closer to achieving their season aim.

He said: “That’s the most important goal I have ever scored. I’ve been waiting for a while to get on the scoresheet for Wycombe and it was a pretty good time to do it.

“It was a great feeling because it came in such an important game for the club.

“We knew we needed to get an equaliser from somewhere and luckily Jon-Paul Pittman did really well when he came on to set the chance up for me.”

And he says Blues are determined to complete the job.

He said: “We’ve got one game left now and we only need a point, but we won’t be looking at it like that.

“We have got to go for the win. You can’t go into a game just going for a point because that’s when the nerves start kicking in.

“We will be going for the three points.”

Wanderers will receive 16 players’ medals should they go up on Saturday.

They are entitled to buy more but only for players who have played in 11 or more games.

Striker John Akinde, whose seven goals in ten games have taken Blues to the brink of League One, will need to play against the Magpies on Saturday to qualify for a medal.
