Duberry: There is a new captain of the ship and we're all on board

WANDERERS captain Michael Duberry says the appointment of a new manager this week has injected fresh life into the dressing room.

He said: “Everyone is far more alert. I don’t think there was any complacency under Peter Taylor, but right now everyone is really on their toes.

“You have to be because in any walk of life when a new manager comes in you have to impress. That’s how we’re thinking now and we have to hope it becomes a habit rather just a quick effort.”

And Duberry says it’s not just the first 11 that have a new sense of purpose.

He said: “When a new manager comes in those players who are out the team are often quite pleased because the slate is wiped clean.

“Everyone will have to work hard and fight for their places again.

“We need that bit of hunger and desire and hopefully it will kick-start our season.”

And Duberry still believes the Blues are good enough to stay up, and actually thinks they were getting it right in recent weeks.

He said: “The squad is good enough and I think there were improvements in the last few games, bar the Gillingham game. So we were improving.

“Obviously we’d have liked to have been sitting in a play-off position already, with everything going smoothly and no need for change.

“But the way the season has gone the people at the top felt we needed a change.

“That’s the way we’ve gone and we have to react positively.

“The club has made a decision and there is a new captain of the ship.

“We’re all on board. We’re all pointing in the same direction and hopefully he can take us forward.”

Duberry met new boss Gary Waddock in a one-on-one chat this week.

He said: “He’s got to put his stamp on the team, but it’s about results and we’ve got to start getting some wins.”
