Semi-final agony for Wilson

SNOOKER: Matt Wilson lost out in an agonising deciding frame in the semi-finals of the latest Pro-Ticket Tour event in Cambridge last weekend.

Following on from his quarter-final appearance in the first event, Wilson went one better by reaching the last four but was left hugely disappointed not to seal a place in the final after a 4-3 defeat to 19-year-old Ben Harrison of Trowbridge, who went on to win the event.

After receiving a bye in the Last 64, Wilson’s deciding frame win over Swindon’s Neil Craycraft in the last 32 was highlighted by breaks of 56 and a crucial 58 in the final frame.

Next up was 2007 Junior Pot Black champion Mitchell Mann, who opened the encounter with a break of 114. But the Wycombe Liberal player struck back taking four of the next five frames with a top run of 88 to advance to Sunday’s quarter-finals.

There he faced former professional and Crucible qualifier Leo Fernandez, and a break of 83 helped Wilson open up a 2-0 lead.

And, despite being pegged back to 2-2, he kept his cool to win the next two frames and advance through to his first semi-final in a National event for three years.

But there was to be no fairytale ending as Harrison recovered from 3-2 down to win the last two frames and seal his final place against Harrow’s Alfie Burden, who earlier in the event had made a maximum 147 break.
