Huddersfield 6, Wanderers 0.
NEW signing John Akinde lasted just 38 minutes of his second coming as Wanderers' miserable season continued with an embarrassing 6-0 thrashing against the in-form Terriers.
Akinde who rejoined the club on loan from Bristol City on Thursday went down under a challenge and was soon signalling to the bench that he couldn't continue as Wycombe were spanked out of sight.
Akinde's exit compounded a miserable first half for the Blues who were already two down by then in front of the live Sky TV cameras who were there to record every moment of their humiliation.
And it didn't get any better after the break as goals from Anthony Pilkington, Theo Robinson, Clarke again and an own goal from Blues skipper Michael Dubery saw Blues hammered out of sight.
Defensively Wycombe were all at sea and the damage could have been worse as they equalled their record league defeat.
Kevin Betsy, Luke Oliver, Lewis Hunt and Matt Bloomfield performed rescue acts, clearing the ball off their own line while the woodwork also came to their rescue as did keeper Jamie Young who prevented even heavier damage.
The Aussie was a surprise inclusion as Blues boss Gary Waddock rang the changes as he attempted in vain to spring the surprise of League One so far against the rampant Terriers.
He made five changes to his team as the bottom of the table Blues attempted to become the first team this season to win at the Galpharm Stadium.
The bookies didn't fancy them at all at the outset offering a whopping 6-1 on the Chairboys recording only their second win all season – and as everyone knows you don't often see a poor bookmaker.
The free-scoring Terriers had scored a huge 32 goals in just nine home league and cup matches this season and with defending like they showed Wycombe were never going to stop them.
Matt Bloomfield, Luke Oliver, Chris Westwood and powerhouse striker Akinde were also drafted in as Wanderers set out to upset the formbook in front of the lunchtime live Sky TV cameras.
They had famously ripped up the script once before on their visit to Huddersfield, winning 1-0 on the day the Terriers opened their magnificent Galpharm Stadium in 1994 – but not this time.
They silenced the hugely expectant home fans for a brief while as they looked okay in their opponents half of the field but at the other end they were never good enough to stop a Terriers side who have made a habit of ripping teams to shreds at home.
They put seven past Brighton, six past Dagenham and fours past Exeter and Leyton Orient.
Blues survived an early scare when Young dropped a routine Anthony Pilkington cross but it wasn't one way traffic in the early exchanges as Wycombe saw more of the ball than the expectant large home crowd were happy with.
Matt Harrold got ahead of his marker to tamely head a Scott Davies free kick into the arms of Town keeper Alex Smithies.
Then at the other end Jordan Rhodes headed a Gary Roberts cross off target as game opened out.
And it was with a header that Town opened the scoring on 21 minutes from a free kick conceded by Bloomfield's high boot effort.
Town made a hash of the original free kick but were bizarrely given a second attempt. Gary Roberts swung the ball over and home skipper Peter Clarke did the rest.
With their tails up Huddersfield could have buried Wycombe in the space of five minutes.
Betsy cleared off his line from Michael Collins who had easily slipped the ball past Younbg.
Then moments later Young produced a stupendous save with his trailing leg to keep out Rhodes point-blank header.
But there was nothing Young could about Town's second on 28 minutes as Town punched huge holes in Blues' defence with a swift attack started with a roll out by their own keeper.
They then quickly switched flanks and Westwood who endured an uncomfortable afternoon in the absence of the suspended Craig Woodman could not cut out the initial danger down his flank and Town had men left over as Roberts tapped in from inside the six yard box.
Huddersfield recognised the weakness and attacked at will down Westwood's side.
Wanderers were soon in deeper trouble.
Just four minutes into the second half they forgot about marking Anthony Pilkington and he gleefully curled a fierce shot into the back of Young's net.
But without Young Blues could have been on the end of an even heavier hiding. He made a terrific tip over stop to deny Theo Robinson and also foiled Jordan Rhodes.
However the Aussie was beaten again on 62 minutes. Bloomfield's clearance off the line was in vain as Clarke followed up for his second of the game.
For some Wanderers fans that was the first goal they had seen in the rout as they had been held up by an accident on the M1.
Huddersfield should have had a fifth but the unmarked Robinson somehow volleyed Pilkington's cross wide from six yards.
Robinson was guilty of an equally bad miss when after Lewis Hunt had cleared his initial effort off the line he excitedly blasted over the top.
Next up it was Doherty who had to come to the rescue after Hunt had riddiculously conceded simple possession to Roberts whose cross looked like being a tap in for Robinson until Doherty arrived from nowhere.
The comedy of errors continued as Young failed to see Robinson and gifted the ball to the striker who dallied allowing Young to recover and save his own embarrassment.
But Town got their fifth on 82 with Duberry sliding a right wing cross into his own net.
The sixth came from the penalty spot as Roberts was tripped and this time Robinson did beat Young to make up for his catologue of misses.
