WANDERERS midfielder John Mousinho says he and his team-mates were embarrassed after Saturday’s 4-1 home defeat against Yeovil and says the players are desperate to put it right.
The team held their own inquest on the pitch in front of the fans immediately after the match before returning to the changing rooms where manager Gary Waddock gave them both barrels.
Mousinho said: “I don’t think anyone can complain about what was said. The players have to shoulder it and everybody accepted what was said.
“The manager and his assistant were exactly right in what they said afterwards, we knew it without them having to tell us.“
Blues had gone into the game in the rare position of being favourites after winning at Bristol Rovers the week before and earning spirited away draws at Leeds and Southend.
But they sagged under the expectation and were soundly beaten by the Somerset side who repeated the four goals they put past them on Boxing Day to keep Wycombe firmly nailed in the bottom two.
Mousinho said: “Everyone let themselves down, including myself. If anyone gets dropped next week I don’t think they can be surprised.
“The players are embarrassed. We’ve got to work hard in training this week and hope that we get the chance to get back in on Saturday and put all the wrongs from today right.
“Maybe we went in to the game too confident. The first ten minutes of the game were our best ten minutes and it is hard to say why we dropped off.”
Blues finished the game in front of half empty stands as the fans showed their disappointment with an early walkout after Yeovil’s fourth goal and Mousinho didn’t blame them.
He said: “I think I probably would have left as well – that’s how bad it was. I don’t think many supporters would have stayed. A few did and fair play to them.”
But he insists that his own belief that Blues can still beat the drop hasn’t taken a battering.
He said: “It was just one of those days I think. We didn’t show up at all. It is not like we have been consistently bad and losing.
“Maybe we went in to the game too confident. The first ten minutes of the game were our best ten minutes and it is hard to say why we dropped off. We just took our foot off the gas and capitulated.”
Wanderers now have 16 games left to fight for their League One lives, starting with Saturday’s derby at Mousinho’s former club, in-form Brentford.
And Mousinho is backing his team-mates to return to form at Griffin Park and kick-start their survival bid again.
He said: “We’ve got to respond. We have got to raise ourselves again.
“There are still plenty of points to play for and plenty of winnable games considering the performances we had been putting in against the big teams.”
