Hanks: We'd have lost a month ago

WASPS director of rugby Tony Hanks says the final 20 minutes of yesterday’s victory over Gloucester proved his team are maturing this season.

Having led 13-0, Wasps were pegged back to 16-16 and looked there for the taking until their second wind blew Gloucester away.

Hanks said: “Maybe earlier on in the season or through January we’d have let that slip, but that’s the growth of this team.

“We kept attacking. We didn’t sit back and wait. A couple of things didn’t go our way and we made a defensive error which let [Mike] Tindall score a good try.

“But we responded well, kept our composure and came back and I thought the pack in particular, which had given themselves a poor mark last week, came out and really responded.”

It was a valuable win for Wasps, built on a superb first half.

Hanks said: “In the first half we were very good. Tactically we attacked the right channels and put them under pressure.

“We let ourselves down a bit in the second half, but a little bit of David Lemi magic and again the defence that we’re renowned for, holding out at the end, gave us a really important win against a team that’s been playing really good football.”
