Wanderers kick off make or break fortnight

STRIKER Stuart Beavon says Wycombe are facing the biggest eight days of their season.

The Blues lock horns with relegation rivals Oldham and Exeter in successive matches and Beavon says the results from those two games could make or break them.

Blues are seven points short of safety at the moment and have played more games than most of their drop zone rivals.

They have just 11 games left to save their League One status or face an instant return to the division they spent five years trying to escape.

But Beavon says six points from the next two matches would put Blues right back in it and set the nerves jangling among all the other drop zone rivals.

Beavon is under no illusions about the size of the task as the team prepared to set off to Oldham today for the first part of their make or break double header.

He said: “It is the biggest two weeks of our season. They are two massive games and we need to get six points from them.

“These are the games we need to be winning and we are confident we can win them both.

“If we get six points from the next two games we are right back in it and put the pressure on to a few other teams.

“The league table doesn’t look that great but we are playing well enough to pick up the points.”

Wanderers have only collected back-to-back victories once this season and that needs to change.

They have only won seven of their 35 matches in total this term and with 51 points often quoted as the total needed for survival, they need to average two points per game to hit that total if 51 points proves to be the benchmark.

But they do have a favourable run-in. After Oldham and Exeter their programme also includes a trip to a fast-falling Leyton Orient side who have not won in seven and a home clash against Gillingham who have not registered an away win all season.

They also face a midweek trip to lowly Tranmere Rovers and a home clash against a Hartlepool United side who are also anxiously looking over their shoulders.

Beavon said: “Everyone is really confident, the mood in the camp is good.

“We know the games are running out but we really feel that we can do it and that there are enough matches in there that we can win.”

Beavon is hoping that his cameo performance when he came off the bench in last week’s 0-0 draw with Carlisle United will be good enough to put him at the forefront of the scrap and earn him a starting berth at Boundary Park.

He lifted a nervous-looking Blues last week and looked the most likely player to conjur up what would have been a much- needed winner.

He broke away and looked to have the goal in his sights before he stumbled and a rare opportunity was gone.
