STEVE Hayes, the man who dreamed up the idea of Wasps’ St George’s Day Twickenham spectacular says defeat against Bath will ruin the day for him.

Club owner Hayes has taken years turning his idea of hosting a massive sporting event in celebration of our patron saint into reality and there will be no one prouder when the teams run out in front of 60,000 fans at Rugby HQ raising money for the Help for Heroes charity.

But he says he will be shattered if Bath win the match.

He said: “Bath winning would ruin my day.”

Hayes, a fierce patriot, tried to arrange a St George’s Day celebration a couple of years ago but it clashed with the European Heineken Cup.

Now his plan has come to fruition and tomorrow his Wasps team will move their vital Guinness Premiership fixture away from Adams Park and into Twickenham.

He has been backed in his plan by Prime Minister Gordon Brown and supermodel Elle Macpherson and tomorrow at 5.30pm his dream will all come together.

Proud Hayes admitted: “It is my idea and I am proud that we are putting on the biggest sporting event for St George.

“I am really pleased to have been able to do it.

“I am really proud of this country, there are too many people knocking it when we have got so many things to be proud of.

“We tend to look at all of the things that are wrong instead of all the things that are right.”

Hayes has signed a three-year deal with Twickenham to put on a Wasps St George’s Day there for the next three years at least.

And he is expecting it to grow.

Although almost 60,000 fans have bought tickets, Hayes is disappointed that Twickenham hasn’t been sold out to its 82,000 capacity, but with tickets available on the day the crowd could well stretch to 70,000.

And Hayes believes that is just the start.

He said: “I think it is one of those events that will get bigger each year and gain momentum.”

Tomorrow will be a celebration of Englishness, with Wasps even turning out in special one-off gold and black jerseys with a loud and proud St George’s flag on the front.

There will also be music from Alexandra Burke, plus 380 Pro-Excel dancers and plenty of pagentary with The Royal Marines Band and London Chorus Choir performing on the pitch before the kick off.

World Heavyweight boxing champion David Haye is also hoping to be there to join in the celebrations.

But Hayes admits his personal day will turn sour if Wasps don’t beat Bath.

The match, the penultimate game of the regular league season, has taken on huge significance with both clubs battling for a top-four berth and a place in the play-offs.

Wasps currently hold fourth, just two points and two places ahead of Bath who stayed in touch with a 21-20 win over Northampton on Tuesday.

Hayes said: “It’s a massive match to match the occasion and I will feel absolutely devastated if we lose.”

l Supporters can turn up and pay on the turnstiles tomorrow.

Prices start from £10 for adults or £5 for concessions. £1 from every ticket will go to Help for Heroes.
